Member Preview - Amazing Butterflies
Saturday, January 21, 10:00 AM, Carnegie Museum of Natural History

Be among the first to embark on a journey revealing the unusual
relationships between caterpillars, butterflies, and their natural
surroundings. By weaving through a room-sized maze, children adventure through leaves, learn how to move like a caterpillar, transform into a butterfly, and take flight.

Amazing Butterflies invites you to shrink down into the undergrowth to become one of the most extraordinary creatures on earth by climbing in pupa pods, crawling through a monarch tunnel, soaring down the butterfly zip line and fending off a hairy plant attack. Together, families will explore this interactive experience and learn the surprising challenges butterflies face every day. I', sending this article out in advance because I expect the event to be popular and space is limited.

Go to the link and Reserve your spot.  If you are not a Museum member, consider joining to be able to attend events like this and to receive the wonderful emails from the curators.
Memberships begin at $50 for seniors and $75 for individuals (there are other fees for families).

Tam O’Shanter Drawing Sessions

Wite-Out and red pens in hand, mark up, scribble, and ornament the document!
An ode to the art of the edit, this session is led by Karen Kelly and Barbara Schröder of Dancing Foxes Press, publishers and editors of the creative team for Carnegie Int’l, 57th ed., 2018. After a little lesson on how to draw editing and proofreading symbols, participants will amend and adorn iconic written passages from such fields as law, science, and journalism.

Tam o’shanter hat drawing

These creative sessions are for those who draw and for those who don’t. Explore contemporary art through improvised forms of drawing with artists and organizers of the 2018 Carnegie International. Sketching, doodling, cartooning, mapping, writing, and marking are among the many modes that will bring us together.

Named after the original art classes for young people that Carnegie Museum of Art has been holding since 1929; the tam o’shanter, or tam, is a Scottish beret—oft adorned by a pompom. The event is free, please register to attend. This event takes place at Alphabet City Center, 40 W. North Avenue, PIttsburgh

Have you tried snowshoeing?

I've been complaining loudly about our current cold weather. The weather is probably not going to change for a while so I think I better find something enjoyable to do in the remaining  cold weather.

Venture Outdoors is a member-supported local non-profit that "makes it easy for you to get outside." You might enjoy the Winter Solstice Stroll on 12/21, the Christmas Bird Count on 12/31, the Chocolate Tasting Hike on 1/14, or a snowshoe class for beginners on 1/17.

Go to the organization's Home Page and then the calendar to get the details about the outdoor activites that appeal to you.

THE LION IN WINTER
Dec 1-17

Imagine a king who controls an empire stretching from the northern borders of Scotland to the southern borders of France, but has absolutely no control over his own family. With an imprisoned wife, an eager mistress and three sons battling for the throne, King Henry II of England proves that dysfunctional families were every bit as prevalent in the twelfth century as today. The Lion in Winter transports audiences to the Christmas court at Chinon Castle, where a family war is waging— just in time for all the peace and goodwill that the holiday season brings. Appropriate for all ages.

PICT Classic Theatre was founded as Pittsburgh Irish and Classical Theatre, Inc., in 1996. It was founded in reaction to the closing of the Three Rivers Shakespeare Festival and in order to provide a venue for local artists to perform classical works, a mission that has stayed constant throughout the years. The Man who Mistook His Wife for a Hat

November 25- December 11, presented by Quantum Theatre

When one sense fails us, another takes over—and lets us live with newfound joy.
Based on Oliver Sacks’ cherished book, this story of a musician who loses his sight challenges all we know about how we view the world.  It’s a potent parable is a deeply empathetic, singularly moving event.  This chamber opera features a seven-piece orchestra, three sterling singers, and a vibrant video projection that promise to let us see life more clearly and brightly than ever before.

Quantum’s artists mine all kinds of non-traditional spaces for the sensory possibilities they offer when combined with creative design. They find it meaningful to place the audience and performers together, the moving parts inside the works. This production is at 200 N. Highland Ave,  corner of N. Highland Avenue and Broad Street.

Johnny Cash is unforgettable. Steady like a train, sharp like a razor, with the perfect blend of country, rock ‘n’ roll, and folk music, Cash
paved the way for artists of all genres for years to come.
Without Johnny Cash, we wouldn’t have the music we’ve all enjoyed over the past 6
decades.
