Native American Pow Wow
Saturday and Sunday, noon -7pm in Dorseyville

Dance Competition And Traditional Drumming

Native American culture will be celebrated this weekend at the 40th annual Council of Three Rivers American Indian Center Pow Wow. The event includes more than 150 dancers and drummers from multiple Native American tribes.

Cultural advisor Mike Simms said even though there isn’t a reservation in Pennsylvania, there is still a thriving native community, which is shown at the Pow Wow.

“It’s a great experience,” Simms said. “It gives you a chance to realize that the native culture’s not dead and we’re still here practicing our culture and our teachings.”

Farmer's Markets - still open

Even though we had some chilly weather last weekend, it's still peak produce season in western PA.

I often go to the one on Station St in East Liberty and love that it's open from 3pm to 7pm. You can stop on the way home from work and get something fresh for dinner. My daughter goes to the market in Sq Hill to get prepared Greek food to make an instant picnic.

Post-Industrial Carrie Furnaces Tour

Towering 92 feet over the Monongahela River, constructed of 2.5" thick steel plate and lined with refractory brick, Carrie Furnaces 6 and 7 are extremely rare examples of pre World War II iron-making technology. Since the collapse of the region's steel industry in the 1970s and 1980s, these are the only non-operative blast furnaces in the Pittsburgh District to remain standing.

While production may have stopped in 1982, the era of Carrie as an artistic muse was just beginning. Today, Rivers of Steel creates opportunities to experience the site from post-industrial perspective, revealing how guerilla artists, urban explorers, and curators, installation artists and even landscape designers have made creative use of a the space. This specialty tour includes areas of the site that are not included in the Industrial Tour, including an introduction to the Iron Garden Walk. Click on the link for more info.

Pittsburgh Festival of Firsts

Pittsburgh has given a lot of firsts to the world—including the first wire cable suspension bridge, the first movie theater, and Heinz ketchup.

Now, the world is about to give back in a big way as the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust presents its fourth and most diverse Festival of Firsts—an expanded showcase of never-before-seen performing and visual arts attractions.

Over the course of eight weeks this fall, Pittsburgh’s Cultural District will become a hub of United States, North American, and World Premieres. These works by renowned, globally-minded artists feature a full range of arts disciplines—theater, dance, music, visual art, pieces that defy category—and take place in both traditional and unexpected spaces. From intimate experiences in galleries to physically following a story as it unfolds in an historic church, from mind-blowing outdoor light shows to a circus arts spectacle in the region’s largest theater, each piece will challenge, excite, entertain, question, and leave audiences seeing the world in a new way.
