Lewis and Clark History Hike

April 7, 2018, 10:00 AM - 04:30 PM
One of the ongoing debates of American history is where exactly did our greatest western expedition begin. From the mind of Jefferson at Monticello to the Falls of the Ohio near Louisville, Kentucky to St. Louis, Missouri, many communities have laid claim to this honor, but none has such a clear, logical case to make than Pittsburgh. Join national reenactor and living historian, John McNulty, as we explore the many connections our region has to this famous expedition including the back story of how the two captains became friends in the years before the adventure began.
We will cover some of Pittsburgh’s most diverse, rugged and beautiful terrain stopping from time to time to learn about the past, discuss efforts to extend the national historic trail to Pittsburgh and share information about a wildlife conservation project on nearby Brunot’s Island.
Register and find out more about all the activities offered by Venture Outdoors. Activities offered by this group often fill up early so reserve your spot as soon as possible.
Where: West End
Level Of Difficulty: Moderate
Spots Left: 19
Program Cost: $12.00 (Members Pay: $8.00)

Peace presented by The Bach Choir
March 24 & 25 at Union Project

The music presented in this performance seeks the peace so desired around the world. Over centuries musicians have written works that reflect this emotion and our concert will feature settings of the simple but powerful text, Dona Nobis Pacem, by several well-known—and some not as well-known—composers. Expressing the sentiment in the text of “Grant us Peace” encourages us all to seek this state of being.

The Bach Choir is joined for this performance by Syrian poet Osama Alomar, reading selections from his works. Born in Damascus, Syria  and now living in Pittsburgh via Chicago, Osama Alomar is one of the most well-respected Arabic poets writing today, and a prominent practitioner of the Arabic al-qisa al-qasira jiddan the “very short story.”

International Film Fest
March 22 - April 8

The mission of the Carnegie Mellon International “Faces” Film Festival is to engage the Pittsburgh community with all-encompassing programming that promotes cultural exchange and expression, and through film, illuminates the local and global ethnic communities which seldom have opportunities to celebrate their artwork and culture on a large public scale. By collaborating with guest filmmakers, arts organizations, and local businesses, the festival creates a platform for these ethnic groups to expose the Pittsburgh community to their cultures, allows attendees to identify and relate to their own origins, and for cinematic artists to engage audiences with their films and dialogues.

ReuseFest - Declutter Your Basement for
a Good Cause
April 21, 10 am - 2pm Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh employee parking lot

In the spirit of Earth Day (and spring cleaning), the Pennsylvania Resources Council is holding its ReuseFest to collect materials that can be reused by local nonprofits.

“You have the chance to go to one central location and drop off as many things at one time,” says PRC spokeswoman Mary Beth Mueller. “No other organization does this type of collaborative event.”

ReuseFest isn’t necessarily a place to dump absolutely everything cluttering up your home — there is a chance that an item won’t be needed by any of the 10 participating organizations. For example, no e-waste (TVs, computers, etc.) Find out more

ReuseFest also will include food trucks, a pop-up shop and giveaways. All materials donated will be reused in some fashion, whether they’re resold, repurposed or given to those in need.

Donations will go to the Animal Rescue League, Brother’s Brother, Catholic Charities, Construction Junction, Free Ride, Global Links, Goodwill, Off the Floor, Pittsburgh Center for Creative Reuse and UPMC Medical Equipment Recycling Program.

Shankar Vedantam

Like a puppeteer behind a curtain, the hidden brain shapes our behavior, our choices and the course of our relationships. But unconscious biases don’t just live in our individual brains; they also influence the success or failure of our organizations.

As National Public Radio’s social science correspondent and the host of the Hidden BrainPodcast, Shankar Vedantam offers unique insights into how our unconscious biases affect the decisions we make. He bases these insights on data, not psychological theories of the subconscious, to reveal unconscious patterns and ways in which we can avoid the mistakes they often cause.
