Jammie Jam 2014 — New Year’s at Noon


Come party like it’s midnight! Presented by Macaroni Kid, this New Year’s celebration will have your kids celebrating so hard they’ll wear themselves out. There will be dancing, music, a pajama parade, face painting, entertainment and balloon art, kid-friendly activities, and a surprise balloon drop and countdown! Nutcracker Holiday Party and Open House

German food, entertainment, museum tours, horse drawn wagon rides and old time crafters provide something for everyone here! My toddler grandchildren loved the carriage ride and the food; the BierGarten was filled; and there was a nice restaurant for "indoor" eaters. (The market is held primarily outdoors.)

Three Rivers Film Festival Starts Friday



The 32nd Three Rivers Film Festival, Pittsburgh’s oldest and largest film festival, has added Waterworks Cinemas to its list of venues. (For former suburbanites like me this means there’s a parking lot!)

The Festival starts Friday and continues through Nov. 23 courtesy of Pittsburgh Filmmakers and Dollar Bank. The are four venues: Regent Square Theater (RS), Edgewood; Harris Theater (HT), 809 Liberty Ave., Downtown; Melwood Screening Room (MSR), 477 Melwood Ave., Oakland; and Waterworks Cinemas (WC), 930 Freeport Road near Fox Chapel and Aspinwall.

Lessons are available at both North & South Park Rinks this season and run for four weeks. Students must be ages five and over.

Twilight Visit at the Miller Homestead


Ease out of daylight savings time and enjoy the Homestead at dusk with candles and lanterns. Hot cider and cookies will be sold. Miller Homestead Associates dress in period attire, give information about the family and the area history, demonstrate crafts, and answer questions.

This old stone farmhouse is a sturdy remnant of frontier days. Families gathered here to worship before there was an area church or a minister. Sons of Oliver Miller served in the militia, the Revolutionary War and were involved in the Whiskey Rebellion.

FrickKids - Wheel Power

 

Plan ahead to join in a hunt through antique cars and carriages for tall wheels, short wheels, wheels of wire and wheels of wood. Can you guess how many wheels there are? Create a zoomy wheel to take home.

FrickKids is a free program for children ages 4-8 that takes place on the first Saturday morning of each  month. Each session includes a lively tour and a take-home project.

Volunteers Needed to Help at the

Food Bank’s Fall FoodShare

 
Fall FoodShare is a wonderful volunteer opportunity for families, groups, scout troops, church groups and organizations that want to make a difference.

Sponsored by the Food Bank, Giant Eagle and Citizens Bank, Fall FoodShare takes place at almost every Giant Eagle supermarket in the region Oct 25 -  Nov 27.



Giant Eagle shoppers can purchase items or make a monetary donation to help feed the hundreds of thousands of seniors, children and families in southwestern Pennsylvania who are experiencing hunger and food insecurity. Each participating store has a specially marked bin to collect the donated items, and many stores will have weekend volunteers, including Girl Scouts, on hand to help. I'll be at the Water Works store on Oct 27!
