 Have You Been to Randyland?

Randyland might be a good place to visit over the long weekend - it's colorful enough to break through our less-than-perfect weekend weather.

Randy Gilson purchased the home in 1995. Dipping into his savings as a waiter, he purchased the home and began to clean it up. Removing trash, setting up community gardens, and putting flowers in front of abandoned buildings got him in trouble with the police more than once, but his goal was always to make the neighborhood a better place to live.

Farmers' Markets are Open

We don'tt have to leave the City limits to buy farm-fresh vegetables. Visit conveniently located Farmers' Markets throughout the summer and fall to find a wide variety of perennial favorites and seasonal specialties. All markets sell farm-fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, cheese and baked goods, while several locations also sell flowers, small gifts and gardening items. I enjoy the fact that most Markets are open late in the afternoon - plenty of time to stop in after work and buy fresh food for dinner. Spring Schedule.

The Animal Rescue League’s mission is to provide temporary shelter, food, medical attention, and comfort to all abandoned, neglected and injured animals brought to us by the community; to restore lost animals to their owners or seek new homes for them, and to educate the public about the humane care of animals with a goal of reducing overpopulation.

At the Wildlife Center volunteers receive hands on experience working with Pennsylvania’s native wildlife and have the satisfaction of helping these injured and orphaned wild animals, who probably would not survive otherwise. They are one of the few local shelters that accepts baby birds. Find out more about the organization and what you might do to help!

What is Pittonkatonk?

It's a free, outdoor, family friendly community celebration of brass music featuring  local and touring musicians. Held at the Schenley Park Vietnam Veterans Pavilion, Pittonkatonk blurs the lines between music festival and family reunion.

There’s no formal stage, no ticket prices, and no vending. Instead, bands play in the crowd with little to no amplification. The community creates a potluck table of food donations for refreshment, and folks of all ages can be seen dancing together. This day-long event features all styles of brass music including Balkan, New Orleans Jazz, Symphonic, and street/protest/punk bands. Its success is due to a large outpouring of support at all levels, from individual donations to community partnerships. Attendance has grown exponentially each year, with more and more people contributing what they can in order to make Pittonkatonk a highly anticipated event     When?  Saturday, May 7 Find out more
