Film Premiere: The Rock

Thursday, March 7, 2019 • 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Heinz History Center

Join the Heinz History Center for the premiere of “The Rock,” a documentary about the life and legacy of Therese Rocco—one of America’s first female assistant police chiefs and the first in Pittsburgh.
Tracing Rocco’s beginnings in law enforcement at age 19 to her ascent to leadership in the Pittsburgh Police Department, “The Rock” explores how she broke the glass ceiling for women on the police force and navigated her way through discrimination in a male-dominated field.
Following the screening of the 50-minute documentary, Rocco will share intimate stories about her life, her work as an investigator, and how she continues to contribute to law enforcement and missing persons investigations in Pittsburgh.
Rocco will also sign copies of her recently released book, “Therese Rocco: A Memoir,” following the program. Copies will be available for pre-purchase or in person the night of the program.

ADMISSION

This program is free and open to the public, but advance registration is encouraged. Attendees may also pre-purchase copies of “Therese Rocco: A Memoir” and avoid the line the night of the program.

FEB. 23; 11:30 A.M. – 3 P.M.
HOSTED AT CARNEGIE LIBRARY OF PITTSBURGH IN OAKLAND
February often means slushy streets and freezing temperatures. But it also means spring planting season is just weeks away. Another harbinger is the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s seventh annual seed-and-plant swap, A Celebration of Seeds.

A seed swap is a low to no-cost way to share the bounty, whether you’re bringing in seeds and seedlings or taking home contributions from others. A Celebration of Seeds is co-sponsored by Phipps Conservatory and Grow Pittsburgh.

Admission is free. Phipps community-outreach coordinator Lauren DeLorenze says beginners are welcome. Find out more

Chamber Music at Old Saint Lukes
Sunday, Feb 17 at 2 pm

Chanteuse Daphne Alderson explores the colors of world music with the St. Michel Band: Vladimir Mollov (accordian), and John Marcinizyn (guitar) at Old St. Lukes in the season of love. I attended an earlier concert at Chatham featuring Daphne and John and really enjoyed it. Arriving late I was disappointed that the only open seat was in the front row. Turns out I was lucky since I was able to watch John play the guitar.

Tastemakers: The Artists That Shaped Us

Crash Course: Ancient to Now

Begins Feb. 27 at the Carnegie Museum of Art
How did ancient Greek architects develop the styles we still see today? Why was Monet considered a radical artist by his contemporaries? Carnegie Museum of Art’s Crash Course: Ancient to Now takes you through the most significant periods throughout art history, delving into the artists and events that shaped the aesthetic and cultural tastes of their time.

Beginning in ancient Greece and ending in the counter-culture movements of the 1960s and 1970s, this 15-week series is a prerequisite for becoming a Carnegie Museum of Art docent. If you’d rather choose one topic, classes are available for individual purchase (but you save 30 percent if you buy the whole series).

Per class: $75 (Students: $45)
Whole series: $255 (Students: $105)

"At Eternity's Gate"  Feb 12-16
Beethoven and Van Gogh had more in common than problematic ears.

To a critic who described his dissonant late string quartets as “not music,” the composer responded: “Oh, they are not for you, but for a later age.” Confronted by similar dismissals, Van Gogh says, “Maybe God made me a painter for people who are not born yet.”

A great artist considered not so great at the time is the subject of Julian Schnabel’s “At Eternity’s Gate,” less a biopic than a psycho-artistic essay on insanity and genius.

Schnabel’s version of the Van Gogh story begins late in his short life with his move from gray Holland to picturesque Arles, France, where impoverished post-impressionists like himself, Paul Gauguin and Toulouse Lautrec gather in the local watering hole and argue about forming an artistic collective to support themselves.
