Fireworks Schedule

Not every Pittsburgh-area community will launch their Independence Day fireworks on (and only on) July 4. You can get your fill of the rocket's red glare and bombs bursting in air throughout the long holiday weekend –– if you know where and when to look.

Click to access the Pittsburgh area schedule. Maybe you can go to several or find a nice hill from which you can see several displays on the same evening.

Farmers Markets

Farmers market season is here!  Luckily for us, the rural area of Western Pennsylvania provides so many farms, orchards, and producers.

You can find a farmers market in the greater Pittsburgh area any day of the week! Many have interesting combinations of vendors - the one in my neighborhood has great freshly-made pasta.

Pedal along the Allegheny River with kayaks, paddleboards in Millvale

New crafts have entered Pittsburgh rivers. If you can ride a bike, you can ride these — paddleboards and kayaks powered by pedals.

The pedal board is a sort of a fusion of a bike, a StairMaster and an elliptical machine. Arturo Pineda advises customers to treat the pedal board just like a bike.

Tres Rios Sports, at Millvale Riverfront Park, offers solo pedal kayaks and pedal boards ($26/hour) as well as traditional paddleboard rentals. There is one tandem pedal kayak available for $30 per hour. Hours are 10 a.m to 6 p.m Friday through Sunday. The business will be open through the end of August. Click for more information about Tres Rios Sports.

Hidden Pittsburgh

Discover 31 Cool and Unusual Things to Do in Pittsburgh

For example:  Canton Avenue, in the Beechview neighborhood of Pittsburgh, is the steepest street in the United States, with a maximum gradient of 37 percent. Though only one-tenth of a mile long, for every 100 feet there is a 37-foot elevation gain. (Although Baldwin Avenue in New Zealand is commonly cited as the world’s steepest street, its gradient is only 35%, but Baldwin’s gradient does continue for longer than Canton’s.)

Check out the interesting spots listed HERE. The next time you have out-of-town guests you can incorporate a few of them in your travels between the more typical places we all show off to visitors. Or you can plan a half-day "tour" for yourself.

Best Places for Kids on Rainy Days

Pittsburgh has plenty of activities to offer families when it’s nice outdoors, but we all know it won’t be sunny every day in Pittsburgh. Whether you’re a mom, dad, sibling or babysitter, it can be a challenge to keep the kids entertained when outdoors is off limits.

One of my personal favorites is Wheel Mill - an indoor "park" for mountain and BMX bikes for riders of all experience levels with friendly staff and riders. My 11-yr old grandson loves it! Click here to see the list of interesting places compiled by Pittsburgh Magazine.
