Amazing Butterflies - thru April 23

Shrink down to the size of a butterfly, and take flight on a fun adventure this winter at Amazing Butterflies. Discover a surprise around each corner as you navigate an engaging maze-like exhibition that’s all about butterflies, caterpillars, and their environments. Kids and parents alike can climb in pupa pods, crawl like a caterpillar through a monarch tunnel, soar down the butterfly zip line, and fend off a hairy plant attack as blades of grass tower above. Amazing Butterflies combines the fun of a playground, the excitement of interactive learning, and engaging activities to create a unique, family-friendly experience that opens just in time to brighten 2017’s coldest months.

Amazing Butterflies features exciting exhibits like a butterfly zip line, a climbable spider web, and a giant caterpillar entry tunnel. Parents and children can play games to learn about nectar, lifecycles, and mating, and they can even climb into their own pupa pods as they make their way through the maze. Find out more

Hearts on Fire

Make a Valentine out of Glass
If you dropped most valentines into a 2,000 degree flame, it would be the worst-case scenario. But for couples on a date at Pittsburgh Glass Center this Valentine’s Day, it’s a necessary part of the art.

The East End’s PGC hosts its seasonal Make-It-Now workshop for glass-art amateurs to make their own glass-blown flowers, fused valentines or pendants on Friday, Feb. 13, from 4 to 9 p.m. This beginner workshop, which costs $25 per person, is just one of the many classes that PGC offers throughout the year. Trombone Sunday

The Pittsburgh Trombone Project is an ensemble of four local trombonists devoted to increasing the prominence of their instrument by commissioning new compositions, writing trombone-heavy arrangements of classical, jazz and pop works, teaching classes and performing concerts.

On January 15, the ensemble hosts a “Trombone Sunday” at the Memorial Park Presbyterian Church. Aspiring trombonists can practice with the quartet during a morning warm-up rehearsal followed by a concert with a choir and guest performers.
