Write Your Story, Create Your Book workshops start Jan. 5.

Teacher Sandra Gould Ford’s artistic and teaching career is varied. The native of Braddock founded a creative-writing program at the Allegheny County Jail, published the literary magazine “Shooting Star Review,” and in 2000 (as Sandra Lee Gould), published the novel “Faraday’s Popcorn Factory.”A free workshop for aspiring writers – and book-binders – begins with the New Year.
“I especially love helping people who really have stories that they want to tell and just need to know how to do it,” she said.

“Write Your Story, Create Your Book” is an eight-session class at the Carnegie Library’s Homewood branch. The class is open to anyone age 18 and older. It runs for two hours every other Saturday afternoon at the library starting Jan. 5.The stories can be true-to-life, fiction, poetry, or anything a participant wants. The book-making can be as simple as stapling together sheets of copy paper, or as complicated as hand-stitching books in unusual shapes or made of unusual materials.
Pre-Registration is required but the event is free

Want to Re-Cycle Your Christmas Tree?

If you’re looking to get rid of your Christmas tree, the city has 10 drop-off locations for tree recycling.

Rather than sending your spruce or douglas fir to the landfill, you can offer it to the Forestry and Environmental Services division of the Public Works department to be turned into pine mulch.

You can drop off your tree between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Dec. 29 through Jan. 26 at the following locations:
Hazelwood: Melanchton Ave. off the 5200 block of 2nd Ave.
Homewood West: North Dallas Ave. at Hamilton Ave.
Elliot: 1330 Hasler Street
Friendship: 400 Roup Ave.
Deutschtown: Sue Murray Swimming Pool parking lot, corner of Cedar and Stockton Ave.
Brookline: 1400 Oakridge Street
Brighton Heights: 600 Brighton Woods Road
Squirrel Hill South: Prospect Drive at Hobart Street
Sheraden: Sheraden Park Parking lot at Surban Street
Highland Park: Highland Park Swimming Pool parking lot

If you can't make it to one of these recycling drop-off locations, you can always leave it out for your regular trash pick up (although it's a less environmentally-friendly option), or let it naturally biodegrade in your yard.

One thing you shouldn't do: burn it. Popular Science points out that Christmas trees have flammable oils that could risk a house fire.

Poetry Reading Celebrates Bill of Rights Day,
Free Expression
Bill of Rights Day was born in strife: President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the order creating it on Dec. 15, 1941 – just days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. It was Roosevelt’s way of marking the 150th anniversary of the ratification of the first ten amendments to the Constitution.

BILL O'DRISCOLL / 90.5 WESA

As national “days” go, Bill of Rights Day isn’t a huge deal for most people; it doesn’t occasion parades, or even discounts by big retailers. But someone who thinks we shouldn’t take it for granted is Joan Bauer.

The Pittsburgh-based poet is a long-time member – and former board member – of the local chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. This year, she’s reviving her occasional series of poetry readings marking Bill of Rights Day.

The Bill of Rights covers a lot of hotly contested ground, from gun ownership and trial by jury to state’s rights. Bauer’s event focuses on the First Amendment, which guarantees freedom of religion, speech, assembly, and the press.

“That’s especially important in our time when there have been efforts to suggest that the press is in some sense the enemy of the people, or to suggest that there should be limitations on free assembly,” she says.
