French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec is portrayed by José Ferrer in this film set in 19th-century Paris. The movie follows Lautrec, crippled from a young age, who tries to drown his sorrows at the Moulin Rouge, the celebrated dance hall in Paris’ bawdy Montmartre district. He falls in love with one of his subjects—a spirited young woman of the streets—and his life is thrown into even greater turmoil. Ferrer’s tormented portrayal won him an Academy Award nomination; Colette Marchand (as the young woman) won the Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer; and Zsa Zsa Gabor turns in a colorful performance as Jane Avril, Lautrec’s friend and muse. The film won Academy Awards in 1953 for Art Direction/Set Decoration and Costume Design, and was nominated for Best Actor (Ferrer), Best Actress (Marchand), Best Director (Huston) and Best Picture.
