Allegheny Observatory Tours

 Event: Allegheny Observatory Night ToursLocation: Allegheny Observatory, 159 Riverview Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15214Date: Friday October 26. This is the last tour until spring (Tours are Friday nights, April 1st through November 1st and on Thursday nights, May through August.)Time: 8 pm until approximately 10 pm
Tours of this working research facility begin with a short slide or film presentation and continue with a walking tour that ends at the 13″ Fitz-Clark refractor telescope.  If it’s a clear night, you’ll see whatever celestial objects are within the telescope’s range.  Tours are free but reservations are required.  Call 412-321-2400 between 1:00 and 5:00 Monday through Friday to reserve your spot.  Tours are more adult oriented, however children aged 7 and older may attend.

Wise Walk at Woods Run on Mondays at 9:30AM
This program is geared toward adults 50+. Participants will receive a pedometer  and a t-shirt. Walkers walk the neighborhood and record the number of steps they take each week.  During inclement weather, walks are inside.

Oliver Miller Homestead Children’s Harvest Festival

On July 4, 1772, Oliver Miller purchased a tract of land on Catfish Run from Silas Dackster and settled on this site. He first built a log home in the wilderness. Today, the site is open to the public for self-guided tours every Sunday afternoon from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. from the beginning of May until the second Sunday in December with the last admission at 4 p.m.

Miller Homestead Associates dress in period attire, give information about the family and the area history, demonstrate crafts, and answer questions.  

At the Harvest Festival, children can try their hands at various frontier crafts. Bring your cameras for pictures of your children in frontier dress.

  Lawrenceville Artists' Studio Tour

Visit artists in their studios. Many will be demonstrating their craft and all are eager to answer questions. This year there are 17 artists on the self-guided tour. Studios throughout the neighborhood include painting, fiber arts, photography, stained glass, mixed media, bookmaking, soap making, pottery and  sculpture. This is a free, family-friendly event.

Pittsburgh Irish Festival

Stop by the 22nd Annual Pittsburgh Irish Festival this weekend!  The festival will be held Friday through Sunday September 7-8-9, 2012 at Riverplex at 1000 Sandcastle Drive in West Homestead.

The weekend’s activities will include Irish food and drink, games, music, dance and special activities for the little ones.  The Irish dog area will feature dogs native to Ireland and the Irish Marketplace will offer shopping booths with a vast array of Irish items for sale. See demonstrations of unique skills passed along from generation to generation and try your hand at making a piece of Irish art to take home.  Looking for lost family members?  A Genealogy Pavilion will have information on how to research for family tree and members of Pittsburgh’s Irish organizations will be on hand with information about their services and activities.

Antique German Autos & Parade in Deutschtown

Pittsburgh’s Deutschtown neighborhood will celebrate its heritage with an Antique German Auto Display and a German Parade on Saturday, September 8.  Following the show and parade, a luncheon and celebration will be held at Teutonia Mannerchor.  

 

 

 

9:30 - 10:30:

Antique German and Classic Auto Display
Allegheny Commons East – Union Ave and East Ohio Street
Antique Volkswagens, Porsches, Mercedes and others will be parked around the historic commons, currently being restored to its Victorian elegance as Pittsburgh’s first park. View the autos and talk with their owners as they wait for the beginning of the third Annual German parade through Deutschtown.  Free and open to the public.

11:00 - 11:30:

The Parade will start at Allegheny commons East along East Ohio Street, turning left at Madison Avenue, right on Phineas Street and ending at the corner of Phineas and Chestnut Streets. The parade will include antique autos and dignitaries representing various German, Austrian and Swiss organizations, folk dance groups and singing societies. There will be short performances, free souvenir flags and a treat for the children.

12:00 - 1:30:

A Luncheon and Celebration at Teutonia Mannerchor, 857 Phineas Street, will include the recognition of a living person of German speaking heritage and a historic citizen of that heritage. The public is invited; tickets are available for $15 in advance at Teutonia Mannerchor and Priory Fine Pastries, 528 East Ohio Street.  Tickets will also be sold at the door for $18.

Shakespeare in the Park

Pittsburgh Shakespeare in the Park opens its fall season this weekend with a production of The Tempest in Frick Park.  Magic, adventure, comedy, revenge, love – The Tempest has something for everyone! These FREE outdoor productions use the park environment as background and encourage the audience to become a part of the action.  Audience members are encouraged to bring a blanket and be prepared for whatever the weather may bring.  Very little stops this intrepid theater troupe!

The production will continue at a different city park every weekend in September.  All shows are at 2pm, Saturdays and Sundays.  Dates and locations are:
