Lenten Fish Fries Start Friday March 8
For observant Catholics, March 6 marks the beginning the Lenten season, a time for holy reflection. If you don't have a participating church in your neighborhood you can rely on the Fish Fry Map.
Hollen Barmer, who works for Carnegie Mellon University’s Emerging Technology Institute, created the map in 2012. In 2016, Code for Pittsburgh got involved by coding the map and helped turn it into a Pittsburgh cultural zeitgeist; last year, the map had over 26,000 visits and the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh even acknowledged the map in its Lenten newsletter.
The interactive map lets users search for fish frys through the city and suburbs by name or location. Each location is tagged with its address and a few key facts that Barmer says are the most asked questions.
The map started as a way for Barmer, a transplant from Memphis, to help herself and others find fish frys in a city that is sometimes confusing to navigate.
