Doo Dah Days in Lawrenceville

The Lawrenceville Historical Society and the AlleghenyCemetery Historical Association will host Doo Dah Days at the Allegheny Cemetery on Saturday, July 14.  This annual event celebrates the life and music of Stephen Foster and remembers the pleasures of pre-industrial Pittsburgh, a time when most of the present city was largely rural and sparsely settled. The festival’s music and activities bring back the simpler time of the mid-1800’s, when river boats were a common scene along the Allegheny River.

The festival will feature four folk bands specializing in the music of Stephen Foster’s era, performing throughout the day.  Foster is one of the most influential song writers in American history.  Among his most popular songs are Oh! Susanna, De Campton Races, Swannee River, My Old Kentucky Home, Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair and Beautiful Dreamer.

Free hourly Trolley Tours will offer interesting facts about Allegheny Cemetery, the sixth oldest rural cemetery in the United States, and will pass by Stephen Foster's gravesite, as well at that of his wife Jane. The day will also offer costumed re-enactors, food vendors and outdoor activities for the whole family.

Allegheny Cemetery, Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh
Saturday, July 14, 2012

Parking will be available behind the Teamsters Temple across the street from the cemetery’s Gatehouse entrance.
