Art in the City April 3-12

Stop by the City-County Building downtown for ArtWORKS, an exhibit of art and crafts by our talented city employees.  The exhibit, featuring paintings, photography, sculpture, mixed media and crafts, is free to the public and will be open weekdays 8am–5pm from April 2nd through 12th.  An opening reception will be held April 3rd from 5:30-8 pm.

Home & Garden Show

The Duquesne Light Home and Garden Show is the largest home event in Pennsylvania.  More than nine acres of home and garden products and services will fill the Pittsburgh Convention Center from March 2-11.  Area homeowners can see what's new, shop nearly 1600 exhibits and get advice from thousands of helpful experts.

Among this year’s offerings are:

The Special Exhibit:  Diana, The People's Princess, featuring film, photos, personal objects and displays explaining Diana's journey from childhood to Royal Princess.

A Synthetic Ice Rink made of durable plastic instead of water. Show visitors of all ages are encouraged to lace up their skates (bring your own or borrow a pair at the rink), glide out onto our 2,000 square foot surface, and see for themselves that synthetic ice is just like the real thing, all year round!

A Gluten-Free Zone offering a broad selection of quality foods, experts on Celiac and gluten problems and valuable year-round resources.

The Crawford Grill will present live jazz at the show, with students from Pittsburgh's CAPA School providing nightly entertainment. The River View Café is among more than a dozen dining options at the Show, ranging from a quick bite to a sit-down meal.

Admission includes all Show features and exhibits:  $10 for adults, Children ages 6-12: $4, Under 6: FREE.  Park at Heinz Field on the North Side for $6 - FREE continuous shuttles to the show.

Four times a year, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust hosts a free “open house” in the Cultural District. The popular Gallery Crawl is the perfect way to enjoy a variety of visuals arts and entertainment, free and open to the public, at galleries and art spaces throughout the Cultural District.

All events take place in galleries and spaces within the Downtown Cultural District, a fourteen-square block area bordered by the Allegheny River on the north, Tenth Street on the east, Stanwix Street on the west, and Liberty Avenue on the south.  The Gallery Crawl is ongoing between 5:30 and 9:00 pm, and visitors may start at any time in any location.

2012 Gallery Crawls are scheduled for four Friday evenings:

         January 27
         April 27
         July 13
         September 28

Did You Know…

…that it’s free to ride the T and all PAT buses within the Golden Triangle?

PAT’s Free Fare Zone is intended to reduce boarding delays and promote the use of public transit within Downtown Pittsburgh.  The zone reaches from the Allegheny to the Monongahela River and is bounded by Ross Street, Penn Station and Liberty Avenue at 11th Street.  For bus riders, fares are free within this zone from 4:00 a.m. 7:00 p.m., seven days a week.  For riders of the T, Pittsburgh’s subway, fares are free within the zone at all times.  Once you pass outside the zone, regular fares apply.

… that the Port Authority offers an online Trip Planner to get you from here to there?

PAT's Trip Planner allows you to enter a starting point, destination and desired arrival time, plus preferences like maximum walking distance and minimizing transfers.  It will provide a number of travel options, along with total trip time, printable schedules and alternative stops.

… that all PAT routes offer bike racks?

PAT’s bike-friendly vehicles include  bus routes, the T Light Rail System and the Monongahela Incline.  There’s no additional charge for carrying your bike.  Racks accommodate a two wheel non-motorized bicycle with a wheel size of 16 inches or larger.  Learn more about taking your bike here.

First Night – A Celebration of Pittsburgh

There’s something for everyone at Pittsburgh’s annual New Year’s Eve celebration.  Live music, dance, theater, games, activities, fireworks and a parade will keep the Cultural District hopping to welcome in the New Year.  The festivities begin with fireworks at 6 pm, followed by a parade at 8 and more fireworks at midnight.  The city’s favorite musicians, dancers, magicians, and many more will be performing at various venues throughout the evening and there will be numerous stations for children’s activities and games.

2nd Annual Bocce Tournament and Festival

Bocce and Italian Festivals are natural companions.  Saturday, August 20, more than 25 four-person teams will showcase their bocce skills at the Heinz History Center, while visitors enjoy Italian food and beverages provided by the Common Plea.  Events begin at 1pm and continue until dusk.  Starting at 3pm, spectators can try their hand playing bocce on two public courts in the Smallman and 12th Street parking lot, located directly across the street from the History Center.

Live entertainment throughout the day will feature Pure Gold, Vito DiSalvo & Daniella Pasquini and Jimmy Sapienza’s Five Guys Named Moe. Event proceeds benefit the Italian American Endowed Fund, dedicated to preserving the history and culture of Italian Americans in Western Pennsylvania.
