31st Latin American and Caribbean Festival

A Pittsburgh tradition since 1979, the 31st Latin American and Caribbean Festival will be held Saturday, March 31 at the William Pitt Union, Oakland.  The festival is a free cultural event, attracting thousands of individuals from a multicultural community.

Visitors will find booths offering the authentic cuisine of Peru, Cuba, Brazil, Columbia, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Venezuela, Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados and Jamaica.  Enjoy local and international musicians, traditional dance, handmade arts and crafts, and children’s activities.  Among the over 30 organizations present will be many local language and service groups with a Latin American and Caribbean emphasis.  Learn to speak Portuguese, or where to go to Tango in Pittsburgh!

Ice Skating with the Mascots

Winter is here to stay and there’s no better way to celebrate then a trip to Schenley Park Skating Rink.  The rink is open daily throughout the winter and hosts a variety of special sessions such as Thursday Family Night, Adult Only Skating and College ID Discount Sessions.  Rent skates onsite or bring your own and take advantage of the rink’s skate sharpening service.

This Saturday, January 14^th, is a special day on the ice, as the rink presents WISH 99.7 Mascot Skate Day.  Take to the ice with a menagerie of favorite Pittsburgh area mascots from 1:30 – 3:30 pm.

Skating Fee: Adults - $4.00, Youth (17 and under) - $3.00, Senior Citizens - $3.00

Come Out to Play!

On August 27-28^th, the Steel City Games Fest will return with 24 hours of new and original games.  No computers or play stations, these are real games
– sports, street games, parlor and board games –
played with real people.  Suitable for adults and kids alike, games will be held from noon Saturday to noon Sunday at various venues throughout East Liberty and the surrounding parks and recreation areas. 

Register at the Shadow Lounge, 5972 Baum Boulevard, from noon to 7pm on Saturday.  The $5 registration fee provides admission to all of the festival's games and activities.   According to the festival organizers “games are the social grease that allow strangers to have very real interactions with each other, and the spatial glue that helps people form lasting connections to their space.”  Check the Steel City Games Fest Website for details of games and venues, then come out to connect!
