Antique German Autos & Parade in Deutschtown

Pittsburgh’s Deutschtown neighborhood will celebrate its heritage with an Antique German Auto Display and a German Parade on Saturday, September 8.  Following the show and parade, a luncheon and celebration will be held at Teutonia Mannerchor.  

 

 

 

9:30 - 10:30:

Antique German and Classic Auto Display
Allegheny Commons East – Union Ave and East Ohio Street
Antique Volkswagens, Porsches, Mercedes and others will be parked around the historic commons, currently being restored to its Victorian elegance as Pittsburgh’s first park. View the autos and talk with their owners as they wait for the beginning of the third Annual German parade through Deutschtown.  Free and open to the public.

11:00 - 11:30:

The Parade will start at Allegheny commons East along East Ohio Street, turning left at Madison Avenue, right on Phineas Street and ending at the corner of Phineas and Chestnut Streets. The parade will include antique autos and dignitaries representing various German, Austrian and Swiss organizations, folk dance groups and singing societies. There will be short performances, free souvenir flags and a treat for the children.

12:00 - 1:30:

A Luncheon and Celebration at Teutonia Mannerchor, 857 Phineas Street, will include the recognition of a living person of German speaking heritage and a historic citizen of that heritage. The public is invited; tickets are available for $15 in advance at Teutonia Mannerchor and Priory Fine Pastries, 528 East Ohio Street.  Tickets will also be sold at the door for $18.

Shakespeare in the Park

Pittsburgh Shakespeare in the Park opens its fall season this weekend with a production of The Tempest in Frick Park.  Magic, adventure, comedy, revenge, love – The Tempest has something for everyone! These FREE outdoor productions use the park environment as background and encourage the audience to become a part of the action.  Audience members are encouraged to bring a blanket and be prepared for whatever the weather may bring.  Very little stops this intrepid theater troupe!

The production will continue at a different city park every weekend in September.  All shows are at 2pm, Saturdays and Sundays.  Dates and locations are:

Flock to the National Aviary!

Did you know that the National Aviary is located right here on Pittsburgh’s North Side? 

The Aviary features over 600 birds from around the world and offers a variety of educational, outreach and scouting programs, for students from preschool through adult.  Visitors can feed the birds, frolic with flamingos, penguins, owls or parrots, enjoy a show featuring rare and unusual birds in flight, or visit the aviary hospital to see the latest in avian medical care. Many other special events and lectures are scheduled throughout the year.

Tot Tuesdays are a special time for little bird watchers.  Children five years and younger get free admission with a paying adult and can enjoy a special story time and activity just for them.

 
An accredited institution within the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, The National Aviary participates in the AZA Species Survival Plan, helping to ensure the survival of selected wildlife species through breeding and maintenance of a healthy, self-sustaining population, as well as a variety of other conservation activities, including research, public education, and field projects.  You can learn more about these programs on their website and during your visit.

The Aviary is a fully accessible, one-floor facility featuring both indoor and outdoor exhibits. Its one-level layout is stroller and wheelchair friendly, so that all nature lovers can get close to and interact with the birds.

The National Aviary is open daily 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., except Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.  General admission is $13, $11 for children and $12 for seniors 60 and over.  Children 5 and under are admitted free on Tuesdays and senior admission is half price on Wednesdays.  Additional charges apply for some shows and encounters.

The Merry Wives of Windsor

Pittsburgh Shakespeare in the Parks is presenting their production of Shakespeare’s comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor at a different Pittsburgh park each weekend in September.  Merry Wives hilariously explores the themes of marriage, cuckoldry, jealousy and revenge as only Shakespeare can.  The company uses the natural setting of each park as their stage, inviting the audience to share in their performance space.  Family members of all ages are welcome to enjoy the show, which runs about 1:45 without an intermission.

Opening day is Saturday, September 3 at Frick Park, Squirrel Hill.
Curtain time for all performances is 2 pm.

Kayaking and Art on the North Side

Kayak for free on Lake Elizabeth every Thursdays and Friday with Kayak Pittsburgh.   Located in Allegheny Commons on Pittsburgh’s North Side this shallow lake - only 3 feet deep - is the perfect safe place for beginners, children and hesitant swimmers to learn the art of kayaking.  Glide along the water and enjoy great views of downtown Pittsburgh in a lovely park setting.

Kayaks are available Thursday and Friday from 4 pm until dusk, free from now through Labor Day.. Boats are also available from 10 am to dusk on Saturday and Sunday for $5 per boat.
