The Aviary features over 600 birds from around the world and offers a variety of educational, outreach and scouting programs, for students from preschool through adult. Visitors can feed the birds, frolic with flamingos, penguins, owls or parrots, enjoy a show featuring rare and unusual birds in flight, or visit the aviary hospital to see the latest in avian medical care. Many other special events and lectures are scheduled throughout the year. Tot Tuesdays are a special time for little bird watchers. Children five years and younger get free admission with a paying adult and can enjoy a special story time and activity just for them.
An accredited institution within the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, The National Aviary participates in the AZA Species Survival Plan, helping to ensure the survival of selected wildlife species through breeding and maintenance of a healthy, self-sustaining population, as well as a variety of other conservation activities, including research, public education, and field projects. The Aviary is a fully accessible, one-floor facility featuring both indoor and outdoor exhibits. Its one-level layout is stroller and wheelchair friendly, so that all nature lovers can get close to and interact with the birds.
The National Aviary is open daily 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., except Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. General admission is $13, $11 for children and $12 for seniors 60 and over. Children 5 and under are admitted free on Tuesdays and senior admission is half price on Wednesdays. Additional charges apply for some shows and encounters.
