Pittsburgh's Neighborhoods

Tips for a Successful Visit to an Art Museum with Kids

Pittsburgh has so many wonderful museums!Guidelines below are helpful if you or the kids are new to museum visits; or if you'd like to make museum visits more interesting and enjoyable for yourself or them! Click for details

1) The Basics! No touching, no running, no yelling.

2) Do Your Research! Find out what is at the museum before you visit. Are there tours offered for children or families? Are there certain sculptures that can be touched? Is there a cafe?

3) Set a Time Limit! Figure out what you would like to see and go to that wing or exhibit. Have fun and head out or they'll never want to go back.

4) Make It Fun! Try a scavenger hunt. Lots of kids do better with a friend along so make it a play date with a buddy.

5) Ask Questions! Sometimes one question can start a dialogue that you would never have thought existed.

6) Set an Example! If you're excited to be there, they will be excited to be there. Don't be too disappointed if the child "is bored" the first time you attend a museum.

7) Reward! After your museum trip, pass out rewards for good behavior. It can be something as simple as cookies brought from home to an ice cream purchased in the museum cafĂ©.

Been to the library recently?

I went to the Squirrel Hill branch Saturday to donate some books and met a relaxed group who had just finished their yoga class coming out and an eager group going in for a music class.

While standing in line at the desk to request a tax deduction form I noticed that almost every seat was taken  and that there were children and adults looking for books on the shelves.

My son-in-law is the book "runner" for his family, walking to the branch near his office at lunch time with books to return and a list of books to pick up. Go to the link to see the huge variety of activities and find the branch nearest you.

The Furries are coming!

Once again Pittsburgh welcomes Anthrocon for its Annual Convention. This is the world's largest convention for those fascinated with anthropomorphics or humanlike animal characters. Also known as “the Furries,” the international convention has been hosted here since 2006 with 6,000 attendees representing 34 countries expected this year.

The annual parade or “Fursuit Walk” will take place at 2 pm Saturday outside the David L. Lawrence Convention Center (10th Street) and is open to the public for the first time.

Contact RE/MAX Realty Brokers for help buying and selling properties for your non-furry selves.
