Whiskey Rebellion

 

Nearly 20 years after the revolutionary War began the US government faced a revolution of its own when it tried to create a self-supporting and effective government by instituting an excise tax on whiskey produced in the United States in 1791. Many farmers in western Pennsylvania distilled whiskey and were outright hostile to the idea of a tax on their profits. Large-scale farmers could easily incurred the financial strain of an additional tax, but indigent farmers were less able to pay and they rebelled. Slovenefest

Slovenefest is held July 10-12 at the SNPJ Recreation Center (one hour and a half north of Pittsburgh) and brings together thousands to enjoy the ethnic food, music, culture and fun of Slovenia.

There’s never a dull moment – entertainment runs continuously from noon until late at night and there's special entertainment for children. Don’t miss the Saturday evening fireworks display (weather permitting).

Midsummer Night's Jam

Midsummer is a great time for berries, so what better way to spend a midsummer night than learning how to preserve berries to make jam. 

Learn techniques to stretch your leftover fruit harvest well beyond the growing season. A Penn State Extension Food Preservation and Nutrition Educator will present the preservation process for berries using hot water canning. In addition to the demonstration, we will get our hands dirty and “berried” in making our own jam. Go to the Urban Homesteading Series for info about other events.

Weekly Italian conversation classes that meet at coffee houses (thus the "Italiano Espresso" name)  is just one of the many interesting activities sponsored by Mondo Italiano.  It organizes a variety of programs such as Italian language classes for adults and children, art exhibits, concerts, inter-cultural exchanges, cooking demonstrations and trips to Italy. It also has a library full of material in Italian.

 

Founded in 2003 with the goal of welcoming and assisting the Italian community in Pittsburgh, the organization has become “the” point of reference for anyone passionate about Italy and the Italian culture.

Join The Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 7 for a film screening and discussion of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The discussion will be facilitated by Scott Perkinds, director of preservation at Fallingwater.

 

The event is free for PHLF members and $5 for nonmembers. The film screening will be followed by a short discussion of his work and a question-and-answer session facilitated by Scott Perkins, director of preservation at Fallingwater.
