Whiskey Rebellion

Nearly 20 years after the revolutionary War began the US government faced a revolution of its own when it tried to create a self-supporting and effective government by instituting an excise tax on whiskey produced in the United States in 1791. Many farmers in western Pennsylvania distilled whiskey and were outright hostile to the idea of a tax on their profits. Large-scale farmers could easily incurred the financial strain of an additional tax, but indigent farmers were less able to pay and they rebelled. Visit historic Washington, PA to find out more about the Rebellion and participate in the many different activities taking place July 9-12. Find out more.
