Rather than sending your spruce or douglas fir to the landfill, you can offer it to the Forestry and Environmental Services division of the Public Works department to be turned into pine mulch.
You can drop off your tree between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Dec. 29 through Jan. 26 at the following locations:
Hazelwood: Melanchton Ave. off the 5200 block of 2nd Ave.
Homewood West: North Dallas Ave. at Hamilton Ave.
Elliot: 1330 Hasler Street
Friendship: 400 Roup Ave.
Deutschtown: Sue Murray Swimming Pool parking lot, corner of Cedar and Stockton Ave.
Brookline: 1400 Oakridge Street
Brighton Heights: 600 Brighton Woods Road
Squirrel Hill South: Prospect Drive at Hobart Street
Sheraden: Sheraden Park Parking lot at Surban Street
Highland Park: Highland Park Swimming Pool parking lot
If you can't make it to one of these recycling drop-off locations, you can always leave it out for your regular trash pick up (although it's a less environmentally-friendly option), or let it naturally biodegrade in your yard.
One thing you shouldn't do: burn it. Popular Science points out that Christmas trees have flammable oils that could risk a house fire.
