Farms & Farmers Markets

Pittsburgh food has always been rooted in tradition and fresh off the farm. As a result, farmers' markets are a well established part of Pittsburgh culture. There are more farmers' markets and community gardens per capita in Pittsburgh than in most U.S. metropolitan areas. Some farmers' markets even sell Amish-made wood furniture and rugs. For a complete list of Pittsburgh area farmers' markets courtesy of the Post Gazette click here

If you want to get a little closer to your food, try harvesting your own produce at area U-Pick Farms You'll get some exercise as well as a great big bunch of fresh produce you picked yourself. Visiting a u-pick farm is a great family experience that is both fun and educational. There's something about harvesting your own food that makes you appreciate it more.  Many U-Pick farms also have on-site stores selling other ready-to-go products from their farm.

Sunday, September 25 at 2:00 p.m.
This memorable concert pairs contralto Daphne Alderson and pianist Norma Meyer in their moving musical tribute to the young girl whose indomitable spirit survived and soared beyond her death in a Nazi concentration camp in 1945.
Deeply informed by Anne Frank’s remarkable and beloved Diary,as well as the eternal reverberations of the Holocaust, this carefully cultivated performance incorporates compositions by Gustav Mahler, Leo Smit, Michael Cohen, Harry Burleigh, and Pittsburgh composer Douglas Levine’s musical setting of Maya Angelou’s poem Alone.

A dessert reception with the performers follows the concert. Complimentary shuttle service will be available from the Carnegie Municipal Lot on Main Street (between Mary and Pine Streets).

NEW FRICK ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER

The brand new Frick Environmental Center will open its doors to the public on Saturday.
The new facility, near the Beechwood Blvd entrance to the Park, is the most environmental friendly municipal building in the world, according to Scott Roller with the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy. It is on track to achieve LEED Platinum and Living Building Challenge certifications. “Not only is it efficient and green, but it’s also a learning tool for people who use and encounter it to see what features they may want to bring into their own homes,” he said.

This Saturday's event runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and admission is free and will feature tours, poetry readings, activities for the kids and sustainably-powered food trucks. Over the long term, the building will be used as an education center. Roller said he hopes the design will have an impact beyond the border of the property. Find out more,

Warhol Sound Series
Wednesday, September 14, 2016 – 8pm

The Warhol welcomes back Yo La Tengo, one of the most respected and unwavering bands in independent music. For more than 30 years and 14 albums, the group has charted its own course.

As mentioned in a Stereogum review, “In the best possible sense, Yo La Tengo can feel less like a band and more like a beloved national trust.” Similar to Television, which played the Carnegie Music Hall last fall, Yo La Tengo sits prominently on the trajectory of bands influenced by the Velvet Underground and its impact on rock music in the 60s
