Westmoreland Art & Heritage Festival
Twin Lakes Park, east of Greensburg

 The festival presents performance on three stages, more than 190 artist market booths, 40 food vendors including ethnic foods, a juried Westmoreland Art Nationals exhibition, a Heritage Trail and strolling entertainment such as African-American storyteller Temujin.

This year visitors will have a chance to try on medieval armor in an interactive medieval display booth, handle Celtic instruments on the Deck Stage and watch marionette puppet theater.

The Vietnam education booth will be expanded to introduce visitors to the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial located by the Upper Lake near the Civil War encampment.

Spiny Dinosaur returns to thrill children, and Pittsburgh mime Dan Kamin will interact with the Sunday Edgewood Symphony performance as a person who thinks he’s the orchestra’s rightful conductor. 

There is limited parking adjacent to the festival in pay lots. Shuttles run frequently from Saint Vincent College, the Greensburg Walmart, Nicely Elementary parking lot and Downtown Greensburg parking lot. Handicap-accessible buses and handicap parking are available at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. Rides are $2 round trip; children under 10 ride free.

Explore History on the Fourth

American history lovers have options when to comes to celebrating the Fourth.

The Fort Pitt Museum will have a flag-raising ceremony at 11 a.m., followed by marches and drills by colonial re-enactors. Inside, visitors can take part in a scavenger hunt and crafts while learning about Fort Pitt’s role in the American Revolution. Visitors to the Point can learn about Fort Pitt and Western PAs role in the American Revolution. Inside the museum, visitors can enjoy a scavenger hunt and crafts. Outside, learn how to march and drill from costumed interpreters.

The Frick Museum will have an outdoor hot dog bar at its cafe with gourmet toppings and refreshments and feature live folk, blues and Americana music during the early afternoon. Visitors can reserve a tour of the historic Clayton House or visit The Frick Art Museum or Car and Carriage Museum. Regular admission rates apply.

Meet the Roving Art Cart near You

The Citiparks Roving Art Cart visits a neighborhood park and/or playground every Tuesday through Friday. Children paint, sculpt, bead, and create a summer of magical fun. Weather impacts the type of projects chosen for the day. 

Activities are best suited for children ages 5 to 12. Though all children should be supervised, children younger than 5 must have caretaker engagement in the activities.

Go Fishing in Highland Park

Highland Park’s Carnegie Lake has gone through several changes since it opened in the 1870s. When it was built, it was to be a juncture in the city’s water supply; later, it became a boating hotspot and then a swimming pool.

Now, for the first time in more than 20 years, Carnegie Lake is open for fishing.

In mid-June, Carnegie Lake was stocked with channel catfish, largemouth bass and bluegill, one of the last steps in a two-year effort to restore the pond by the Pittsburgh Parks Conservatory and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Find out more

Carnegie Lake was originally built to serve as a halfway point for water pumped from the Allegheny River en route to a reservoir, according to the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy. Improvements in pumping technology made it obsolete, however, before it even opened. The lake was mainly used for boating until 1932, when half of its space was converted into a swimming pool and the bottom was covered with cement.

Fireworks!

The city of Pittsburgh’s fireworks display will begin at 9:35 p.m. July 4 at Point State Park. Sponsored by EQT, the fireworks will be launched from a barge in the Ohio River just downstream from the Point.

Edged Out  at the Frick Environmental Center

A new exhibit of paintings and sculptures puts the hidden lives of amphibians around us on display thru August. The exhibit focuses on how amphibians have been pushed out of their habitats.
