Volunteer on New Year’s Eve

    






There are 2,015 reasons to be a Highmark First Night Pittsburgh volunteer—free parking, an event button, a volunteer kit packed with surprises—but the only one you really need is this: It’s fun!

There are dozens of ways to help, from being an Activity Monitor, Usher, Button-Checker, even Photographers’ Assistants. Anyone can volunteer: families, school groups, individuals looking for an interesting way to ring in the new year, and age and ability are no obstacle. Volunteers can be grandparents and retirees or elementary-age children. “Sometimes kids [coming to Highmark First Night Pittsburgh] are a little leery of adults. But if you have a kid their own age volunteering, they’ll think, This is cool, there’s another kid here, can’t be too bad. I think it’s great for kids to volunteer because they’re giving of themselves—they’re learning to be helpful.”


Shifts for Highmark First Night Pittsburgh volunteers vary in length, usually only a few hours, and all shifts are over by 11:30 p.m. so you can watch the fireworks and toast 2015 when the clock strikes twelve. Literary Evening with British historian Andrew Roberts

 

 
 
 
 

 

Andrew Roberts claimed his place as a world-renowned historian and author of Masters and Commanders, and The Storm of War. His newest book is a biography, Napoleon, “from the cradle to the grave,” based on new cutting-edge scholarship.

In 2011, NBC commissioned Roberts to commentate alongside Matt Lauer and Meredith Viera on the Royal Wedding of Prince William William to Kate Middleton, following his well-received broadcasts at the funerals of Diana, Princess of Wales and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, and the wedding of Princes Charles to the Duchess of Cornwall. There's a monthly marketplace all set up for you in partnership with Think Shadyside. Each month, 20 local artisans will pop into a space on the second floor above Shady Grove Restaurant at the corner of Walnut and Bellefonte Streets in Shadyside.

A dedicated bartender will attend to warming drinks and sweet treats will be sold by new IMI! artist Gluten Free Goat Bakery. Enjoy lunch, warm up with some drinks and a vegan, gluten free donut and mingle with the artists!

WYEP’s Free Third Thursdays Concerts

Third Thursdays is a free monthly  happy hour event that takes place at WYEP’s studio in Bedford Square in the South Side. Every third Thursday, WYEP offers live music by Pittsburgh musicians, light fare and a couple complimentary beers. The event is all ages, although ID is required for alcohol. No sign-up or tickets required. Doors open at 6:30 – Shows start at 7:00.
