Halfway to St. Patrick's Day - Pittsburgh's Irish Celebration

The three-day Festival is loaded with traditional music, food, drink, dancing, arts and history – there’s even an Irish Dog tent. The Festival is located nearby in the Riverplex at Sandcastle. In addition to special activities over the weekend, the Festival is the centerpiece of yearlong efforts to promote Irish culture in our region.

Two Sides of Art: Westmoreland Museum of Art

So you like portraits, but your friend you brought with you has tastes that cater to the abstract.  This month, the Westmoreland Museum of Art will be opening their @rt 30 exhibit, featuring the works of anatomical papercutting sculptor, Gianna Paniagua, and pointilism portrait artist, Jack Puglisi.  Both artists are masters at their particular crafts which are incredibly different from the other.  The pairing, then, creates a unique exhibition that caters to all types of artistic interests.  The common thread?  A meticulous process in order to create.  Puglisi forms each portrait from tiny dots that come together to create the image.  When making her paperworks, Paniagua chooses to create her repetitive patterns strictly by handcutting each piece.  The exhibition will run from September 4-28 at the Westmoreland Museum of Art. 4764 Route 30

Your Life: The Musical

Ever wanted to see your name in lights? One lucky audience member will have their life story transformed into a hilarious and touching musical show, as if featured on Broadway (except with no script and no budget). It could be you!

Heinz Field Kickoff and Rib Festival

The Steelers and Heinz Field are inviting fans to celebrate the start of the 2014 football season at the annual Kickoff and Rib Festival August 28 – September 1 at Heinz Field. Football, food and fun will highlight the weekend that will feature world-renowned rib vendors, free concerts by national music artists, rides, games, and much more.

Admission is free to the public and there is free bike parking on Reedsdale Street every day of the event except Monday.

There is an additional cost associated with food & beverages and select games & activities on the grounds.

Allegheny Observatory Night Tours

Tours of this working research facility begin with a short slide or film presentation and continue with a walking tour that ends at the 13″ Fitz-Clark refractor telescope.  If it’s a clear night, you’ll see whatever celestial objects are within the telescope’s range. 

The last Thursday night tour is tomorrow; Friday night tours will be held thru November 1st. A short slide or film presentation is shown followed by a walking tour of the building finally ending up at the 13" Fitz-Clark refractor.  If it's a clear night you would be shown whatever celestial objects are within range of the telescope that night.

Location: Allegheny Observatory, 159 Riverview Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15214

When: Thursday night, this week; Friday nights, thru Nov 1^st; 8-10pm

Cost: FREE but reservations are required.  Call 412-321-2400 between 1:00 and 5:00 Monday through Friday to reserve your spot.  Tours are more adult oriented, however children aged 7 and older may attend.  For more information, click here
