Pittsburgh Thinkathon 2013

Part of the National Day of Civic Hacking

A hackathon (codefest, thinkathon, or startup weekend) is an event where  programmers, graphic designers, interface designers, business people and project managers collaborate intensively on software projects in a finite timeline. A civic hackathon specifically focuses on opportunities to improve cities, counties and municipalities. Ours is made possible through collaboration with the Mayor’s Office, Allegheny County, Pittsburgh Dataworks, BuiltinPgh, and Rustbuilt.

Why should you participate?

Because it’s your city and county.  By understanding and processing the content related to selected civic issues as well as selecting the appropriate delivery technology, significant community issues  can often be theorized and solved over a weekend.

Participants will:

• Experience the creative process of the start-up culture
• Enjoy a significant networking opportunity
• Become part of a community of doers
• Learn a ton
• Become more involved in improving the community, city and county

California Markets – Art & Wine Walk

Art & Wine Walk will be highlighting the Brighton Heights Citizen’s Federation local artist’s show in their new office/gallery space and local wines. Second Saturday’s this summer will be your new favorite thing with lots to discover in Brighton Heights.  Local farmers, food, drinks, crafts, art, and community activities for everyone. Including, raffles for local business prizes, sidewalk art, sidewalk chalk, community garden info, and more!

Pittsburgh Neighborhood Festivals

During the summer and fall seasons, Pittsburgh neighborhoods celebrate their history and culture with their neighborhood festivals. The City has just published their new listing. Festivals are listed by date and by location on the City of Pittsburgh website

For example, the Highland Park - Bryant Street Festival is next week (June 2) from noon to       5 pm - the same day as the neighborhood's annual yard sale.

Bike or Hike The Great Allegheny Passage

Many pools will open this weekend but it may be a little chilly for swimming. 

Try hiking or biking the Great Allegheny Passage instead. Friends recently drove down from Boston and were looking forward to 4 days of biking and overnights and inns that looked very nice.

FREE City Tours

Every Friday, from now through September, Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation is conducting free walking tours throughout Downtown Pittsburgh and Oakland.

June tours will be of Fourth Avenue and PPG Place

July tours will be of Grant Street & Mellon Square

August tours will be of Market Square

September tours will be of the Bridges & River Shores

All tours start at noon and last an hour. Specific meeting locations, RSVP info and more details can be found on the PHFL website

Strawberry Festival


Enjoy desserts, live music, crafts, bake sale, delicious food and lots more. There will be music, great food, and strawberry shortcake with berry caramel sauce and ice cream! If it rains, the festivities will move into the Smithfield United Church of Christ’s social hall.
