Children’s Heritage Day at Depreciation Lands Museum

Plan ahead for this! At Children’s Heritage Day, children of all ages can discover (or rediscover) the self-propelled fun of marbles, jump ropes, hop-scotch, playground games, and blowing soap bubbles. Make a simple toy at the craft table, visit the schoolhouse to see how the children of the 1880s learned to read, watch the blacksmith at work, buy some penny candy at the Mercantile, do chores in the log cabin, listen to children’s stories from long ago, or give the Pocket Lady 50 cents and she will let you pick a tiny treasure from her apron pockets!

Art All Night

Art All Night is an annual grassroots event and celebration of the arts held in Lawrenceville.

The event promotes artistic expression in all walks of life and also encourages children to be actively involved by contributing artwork and engaging in on-site arts activities. The show includes and attracts seniors, long-term residents, novice artists, educators, students, and seasoned professionals.

Woodville, the John and Presley Neville house, is Southwestern Pennsylvania’s principal link to the late 18th century, interpreting the time period of 1780-1820 and documenting the lives of the three families that resided there, the Nevilles (1775-1815), the Cowans (1815-1835), and the Wrenshalls (1835-1975).

 Woodville Plantation is conveniently located near Interstate 79 and PA 50, about twenty minutes southwest of downtown Pittsburgh.

 

Woodville is open to the public year round. The grounds are open for self-guided tours Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 am – 6 pm. The house is open for guided tours every Sunday from 1 pm – 4 pm.

 Pittsburgh's Tartan Day Celebration is a family oriented festival of Scottish customs and culture featuring the MacDonald Pipe Band, the Southminister Bell Ringers, singer- Caitasaigh, bagpipers, highland and country dancing, Scottish clans and foods, children's activities, workshops and demonstrations, raffles, Scots Gaelic language lessons, reenactors, the "Basket of Cheer", spinning and weaving, and MUCH more.

Pittsburgh is one of only 14 US cities where hiring topped Pre-Recession Level

Only 14 of the nation's 100 biggest metropolitan areas have more jobs now than they did before the 2008-09 recession. Six of them are in Texas, according to researchers at the Brookings Institution, who recently analyzed local economic conditions through the end of 2012. All of the 14 appear to have benefited in some way from a stable employment base, anchored by either universities, government agencies or high-tech hubs, helping residents avoid the worst of the job losses suffered by other areas.
