October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and October 29th is National Cat Day! In honor of our furry family members, here's a list of some things you can do to show some love for your pet, or maybe be inspired to bring a new cat or dog into your family!
Donate items to a shelter: blankets, food, and other essentials are always needed and most shelters have a "wish list" posted on their website.
- Consider fostering a pet: This takes commitment, both of time and money, but you're saving a life, and that's a great lesson to teach your kids.
- Bring home a new pet: anytime is a good time to adopt a shelter animal. Check a nearby shelter or website. Nearly 4 million animals are euthanized in shelters every year, so when you rescue an animal, you can call yourself a hero!
- Already an animal mom or dad? Invest in your pet's health by investigating whether pet insurance is right for you.
- If you have a dog or cat in your life, pick a day this month to celebrate him or her! Take them to the park then make a stop at the pet store so they can pick out a new toy. If you have a cat, give them a new toy (or a string or a laser pointer...they're so easily entertained by non-toy items!) or have a party in their honor! Get your kids to help you make cat-shaped cookies.
