Walking Tours of The Homewood Cemetery

There are few better places to learn about a city’s history than from its cemeteries. Records of people’s lives weren’t kept as thoroughly as they are now, so some of the most fascinating life stories can get lost, especially those of women, who were never in the history books to begin with. Audacious Pioneers: A walking tour of the Homewood Cemetery aims to broaden the understanding of Pittsburgh history by learning about its dead dames, from a palm reading countess to a renowned opera singer. Though it might be tempting, it’s best not to feed the ghosts.
  • When: Ongoing,  alternating Wednesdays at 1 p.m.

  • Phone: 412-260-6305 (call to confirm)
    Price: $10

  • Location: 1599 S. Dallas Ave, Squirrel Hill

God's Acre - Homewood Cemetery  Multimedia Show  Oct 18, 6pm

While the event happens after dark and 13 days before Halloween, photographer Wade says he isn’t out to spook anyone – that would just play into stereotypes of cemeteries. But the venue was carefully chosen.

“Having the photographs of the cemeteries projected on a big screen in the cemetery chapel is going to be more evocative,” he says. “It’ll make you think more about what you’re looking at.

God’s Acre begins with the cemetery tour at 6 p.m. The remainder of the program begins at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

Homewood Cemetery is located in Point Breeze.
