Pittsburgh Employees Give Input on Employers

The Post-Gazette partnered with WorkplaceDynamics, a Philadelphia-based employee survey firm, to determine the region's Top Workplaces for 2013.

Most important for Pittsburgh-area employees was their ranking of this statement: "I would highly recommend working at this company to others," at 79 percent, followed by "This company motivates me to give my very best at work" (72 percent) and "I feel genuinely appreciated at this company" (71 percent).

Gallup's recent report, "The State of the American Workplace: Employee Engagement Insights for U.S. Business Leaders," notes that 30 percent of employees are engaged and inspired at work while 20 percent are actively disengaged, damaging the company's mission and bottom line and costing the U.S. up to $550 billion annually in lost productivity. The remainder are merely showing up and counting the hours until they go home.

Pittsburgh Ranked #1 in Affordability

A worldwide study by Demographia finds Pittsburgh is the most affordable major metropolitan region in the United States.

The study fixed Pittsburgh with a 2.3 Housing Affordability Rating Category, which made it the lowest in the United States and well below the 3.0 or under mark that is considered "Affordable." Also on the list were Atlanta and Indianapolis, both with scores of 2.7.

Internationally, Pittsburgh is No. 18 on the most-affordable, which is the best among the U.S. markets. That's for its $116,000 median home price and the $51,400 median income in the third quarter of 2013, Demographia said.
