Curl Up and Read About Pittsburgh

After all, the Penguins aren't going to be playing every night throughout the rest of the winter!

The Paris of Appalachia: Pittsburgh in the Twenty-First Century

by Brian O’Neill, Pittsburgh-Gazette columnist

As a former French teacher and relative newcomer to Pittsburgh I picked this book up on impulse and found it enjoyable and educational.
Here is most of Amazon’s blurb: This isn’t so much a history of Pittsburgh, as it is a biography. Sometimes we’re so afraid of what others think, we’re afraid to declare who we are. This city is not Midwestern. It’s not East Coast. It’s just Pittsburgh, and there’s no place like it…

Ready for Saturday’s Nice Weather?  Explore one of these east-side playgrounds!

Blue Slide Playground at Frick Park – Aptly named for the big blue slide carved into the hillside, this playground at Frick offers fun for kids of all ages.  There’s a toddler playground in addition to a more traditional play structure, swing sets, climbing structures, and a quarter cloverleaf to run out all that extra energy.

Highland Park Super Playground  - This is a ginormous wooden play structure in Highland Park.  Take a walk around the water reservoir and pack a snack – you could make a day of this one.

Knit the Bridge

What is Knit the Bridge?

Knit the Bridge is a vision for a grassroots, community-led arts project that would bring the many diverse communities of the city and Southwestern Pennsylvania together to create a large-scale, aesthetically stunning, fiberarts installation on a bridge in downtown Pittsburgh.

The intention of Knit the Bridge is to celebrate the history of Pittsburgh as a city of bridges and steel as well as celebrate the region’s thriving, contemporary arts scene.

Make a Panel or Clean Out Your Closet

The deadline for completed panels will be sometime spring/summer 2013.  But you can still
get started knitting and crocheting now. For those speedy makers among us, you can drop off your completed panels now at any of our drop-off points.

You can also help by donating yarn or other fibers.

AARP Rates Pittsburgh one of the Best Low-Cost Places to Retire

Selection was based an array of criteria, including:

Vibe: The city's 88 distinct neighborhoods create a European atmosphere
Sunny days per year: 194
Median home price: $106,500

With affordable arts (Pittsburgh is home to one of the nation's great symphony orchestras), terrific food (the aroma of ethnic eateries permeates the Strip District) and not one but three beautiful, bridge-spanned rivers to boat on, the Steel City has a lock on great reasons to live there.
